Desalination

Membrane Desalination

Modern Water has proven technology to use a manipulated osmosis process to convert seawater to drinking water. The world's first Manipulated Osmotic Desalination (MOD) proving plant located in Gibraltar began supplying water directly into the local potable water distribution system in 2009. The plant confirms that the technology significantly reduces energy use and chemical consumption, and has a range of additional benefits including substantially lower levels of boron. A larger commercial plant in Oman is successfully and consistently producing fresh water in more environmentally challenging conditions, producing similar savings and operational benefits to those achieved in Gibraltar. The technology and expertise are in place to both retro-fit and new-build, depending on requirements.

Evaporative cooling systems

Our patented platform MOD technology is not limited to the desalination market and can be deployed to great advantage across a number of industries and applications. An example of this is the cooling tower sector, and a proving plant has now been fabricated and is scheduled to be installed in Oman by mid-2010. The technology reduces power consumption by up to 90% and reduces capex by up to 50%. As the process uses seawater, brackish water or effluent in place of potable water, it has the potential to transform the market.

Multi-Stage Flash (MSF)

Our pre-treatment for MSF thermal desalination plants allows an increase in top brine temperature of the plant, thereby increasing output by up to 25%. The technology reduces chemical dosing requirements and has the added benefit of significantly reducing energy consumption. It is perfectly suited to the retrofit market. Initial design work has been completed and analysis of potential locations is currently underway.
