Microtox Acquisition Completed
The deal to acquire SDIX Water Quality division, including its Microtox® toxicity testing technology, was completed today. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome new colleagues in US and also thank existing customers and distributors for their continued support.
Modern Water acquires Microtox
We signed a deal today with SDIX in the US to purchase its water quality division, which includes its world-leading Microtox toxicity testing technology. This is fantastic news for the company and gives us the opportunity to develop our global monitoring product portfolio offering. The division posted revenues of US$4.79m in 2010 and we are buying the assets for US$4.5m. There are clear synergies between our existing portfolio of water monitoring products, as both Cymtox and Microtox use the same platform bioluminescent technology for water toxicity monitoring. We expect the acquisition to be finalised in December when we look forward to welcoming the staff from Microtox to our growing team.

IMWA Congress, Aachen, Germany
We are key sponsors of the 2011 IMWA Congress: Mine Water – Managing the Challenges. Cogent will have a stand displaying the portable trace metal analyser, PDV 6000 plus. Both the on-line and on-site analysers are highly attractive to those working in the mining industry as they enable tighter process control and real-time decision making.
The congress will provide an opportunity for attendees to contribute to an exchange of ideas and opinions related to upcoming challenges in the field of mine water and share their expertise.
4th – 11th September 2011.
Stand at Surrey's Festival of Science and Engineering
We will have a stand at Surrey's Festival of Science and Engineering, taking place today at Brooklands in Weybridge. The festival is a showcase for local businesses to engage with secondary school pupils. The Modern Water stand will be conducting water experiments with a competitive edge, and often surprising results. Staff members will be on hand to discuss how to build a career in science and engineering. Come and say hello if you're in the area.
The world’s first fully commercial application of forward osmosis.
We have been awarded a contract to build and operate a desalination plant by Oman’s Public Authority for Electricity and Water (“PAEW”) at Al Naghdah in the Al Wusta region of Oman, capable of producing 200m3 of fresh water per day. The plant will be the world’s first fully commercial application of forward osmosis.
Neil McDougall, our Executive Chairman, said: “Winning this tender marks a key milestone for Modern Water and we would like to extend our appreciation to the Chairman and staff of the PAEW for supporting our technology. Forward osmosis has emerged as a hugely important technological step-change within the desalination industry, and Modern Water has shown how advanced the company is in this critical area.”
Cymtox Celebrated!
Cymtox has been celebrated at Cardiff University's Innovation Awards. The company, along with the University's School of Biosciences, was awarded the prize at a ceremony at the University in May 2011.
Nicola Randles, chief executive of Cymtox, said: “The work we have done and continue to do with Cardiff University to develop this new technology has proved extremely successful. Not only have we realised a unique product but we have developed a business which has created 30 jobs – which, in the current economic climate, is no mean feat. Units have been sold in China to monitor drinking water intake on river waters, and is presently being trialled in the UK.”

Desalination Company of the Year
We have been nominated as ‘Desalination Company of the Year’ in the Global Water Intelligence (GWI) Global Water Awards 2011.
The nomination comes in recognition of the success of the Group’s patented manipulated osmosis (MO) process. In 2010, we successfully demonstrated a reduction of up to 30% in the amount of energy required in the desalination process at our plant in Al Khaluf, Oman.
Described as representing a new paradigm for the industry, our MO technology has been singled out for having broad implications across the industry.
The awards will be presented by Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations, at a special ceremony to be held in Berlin on 18 April 2011 in conjunction with the Global Water Summit 2011.
Cymtox Continuous Toxicity Monitor CTM
We have secured further orders for our Cymtox Continuous Toxicity Monitor CTMTM units in China. This represents a significant boost for the Group’s newly established MW Monitoring division which includes the Cymtox technology and the recently acquired Cogent Environmental business. The new Chinese order is for 25 units and stems from a robust pipeline of potential orders, which follows previous sales in this important and influential region.
Cogent Environmental
We announce today the purchase of Cogent Environmental, a global provider of state-of-the-art environmental and process monitoring products, technologies and services. The acquisition represents an important strategic step for Modern Water’s existing water monitoring business, Cymtox, and significantly increases our offering in this developing market segment. As a result, Modern Water has established a new dedicated division, MW Monitoring, to consolidate our activities in the instrumentation and monitoring industry.
